The history of Dayton Band BRD House is rich with remarkable people and cherished memories. Founded by Robert R. Daugherty in 1942 above the Victoria Theatre, the store relocated to 4523 N. Main Street in 1965. People frequently remember the large guitar painted on the side of the building.
In 1973, the Daugherty family endured a great loss with the passing of the iconic Robert R. Daugherty. His son, Robert W. Daugherty, left his own career in instrument repair to carry on his father's legacy.
The store found a new home in 2001 at 8500 N. Main Street, where The BRD House Not-for-Profit was established in honor of Bob and Sheila's son, Brandon Reed, who tragically passed away as a teenager.
After two more moves, Dayton Band BRD House settled at its current location: 42 East National Road in Vandalia. Bob and Sheila lovingly ran the store until 2018, earning the admiration of the community and beyond. They passed the torch to the Hartwells, but stayed involved for years as advisors, friends, and in instrument repair.
The legacy lives on in the building’s entrance, where two display cases hold treasured memories of the store’s illustrious journey.
